Proper Groundskeeping And Home Maintenance Can Protect Against Wildfires

1:01 KLCC s Brian Bull reports on how Oregonians can maintain and help protect their home as the state readies itself for wildfire season. Over time, many homesteads get cluttered with grass, brush, twigs, and other things that could provide fuel for fire.  At a recent wildfire webinar, Claire McGrew of the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office outlined several zones around a home that should be maintained to help offset fire risks.  One of the most immediate places are roofs and gutters. Dead and dry foliage on a property can feed spreading wildfires.  Homeowners are advised to rake up and dispose of accumulated leaves and branches ahead of regional wildfires.

Eugene City Councilors Hear Results From Community Safety Initiatives Surveys

Eugene 4J Anticipates Fulltime In-person School Come Fall

Eugene 4J plans to welcome back full-time in person schooling in the fall of 2021. Credit Brian Bull / KLCC News 4J spokesperson Kerry Delf said most of their students are now doing hybrid learning in person for two days a week, and learning from home the rest of the time. “We are expecting and planning for a return to school with 5 days a week onsite in the fall,” Delf said. “Although, we’re still awaiting guidance and information and of course the development of the public health situation.” Delf said about 30% of the district’s families are continuing with online  only learning at home for the rest of this school year. She said the district has offered COVID-19 vaccine clinics to teachers and staff and is now scheduling clinics for teens.

Poetry, Songs, And Prayers Mark MMIW Event In Springfield

1:07 KLCC s Brian Bull reports on a local observance of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Day, with members of a local Native American theatre troupe and a UO Indigenous organization.    Poetry reader: “In the dark, in the bitter wind…listen to a dream…” Members of illioo Native Theatre and the University of Oregon’s Indigenous Womxn’s Wellness Group read poetry, under trees adorned with red dresses. Red dresses and other garments were hung from trees to symbolize thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women across North America. Credit Brian Bull / KLCC Co-organizer Marta Clifford explained the symbolism. “…to show a garment that’s empty, because the women are missing. In many Indigenous cultures, the only color that the spirits can see is red…hoping that they can see the red garments we put out in their honor.” 

Lane County And Others Move To High Risk Friday

Fifteen Oregon Counties that had to halt indoor dining a week ago due to the state’s designation of “extreme risk” for COVID-19 restrictions can resume indoor dining Friday. The dining room at Cafe Soriah in Eugene. Restaurants in high risk counties can offer indoor dining at 25 percent capacity under state guidelines. Credit Brian Bull / KLCC Lane, Deschutes, and Linn Counties are among those that were upgraded to “high” risk this week by Governor Kate Brown. Benton, Linn, Lincoln, and Douglas are also among the 24 Oregon counties designated high risk. In that category, indoor dining is permitted at 25 percent capacity.
